Le roman me regarde, là, sur la table, à côté de la vieille Remington, dans un classeur rouge. Il est dodu comme un dogue, mon roman. Ma seule chance. Va." Ce sont les dernières lignes de mon premier roman, écrites il y a tout juste trente ans. J'avais l'impression que tout se jouait là. Je ne voulais écrire, à l'époque, qu'un seul livre. Un livre qui raconterait l'Amérique et ses dévorantes mythologies : la vitesse qui permet de traverser un paysage sans fin, le désir tenu en laisse comme un chien enragé par une Lolita d'un bled perdu, le succès toujours inattendu et hors de proportion, et toute cette bondieuserie qui dégouline de la bouche des pasteurs noirs et des politiciens blancs. La caméra lentement se déplace des paysages vers les visages et l'on voit, dansant la java new-yorkaise, ce cocktail de violence et de sexe colorés : Martin Luther King et Norman Mailer, Spike Lee et Calvin Klein, James Baldwin et Madonna, Truman Capote et Naomi Campbell. Le bruit de la Remington 22, unique chant de cette aube.
