Prior to enrolling in an upcoming session, all new students are required to complete a quick written and oral test. This ensures that you are placed in the appropriate course level. If you have no French experience — even if you don’t know what bonjour means — that’s ok! Everyone is welcome and we have plenty of courses for beginners.

Please note that the best way to reach the Education Department is via email at: adultprograms@frenchlibrary.org. You can also reach of Administrator at 617.912.0415, Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm. Merci!

Children under 10 are always placed in courses based on their age and native language and do not necessitate a placement test. Placement tests are required for all teen courses. Contact youthprograms@frenchlibrary.org if you have any questions!

Step 1: Written Test (Required)

For Adults (17+):
Complete the Written Test at least one week prior to the beginning of each session. Depending on your level, the written portion of the test should take you 10 to 20 minutes. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at

For Children (10-16):
If your child is new to the Center and between the ages of 10 and 16, please have them take our Placement Test for Kids & Teens. Depending on your child's level, the test should take between 10 and 20 minutes. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at youthprograms@frenchlibrary.org

Please note that the written test is not available on cell phones. You can use any kind of tablets or computers.

Step 2: Oral Test (Required)

Once you have submitted a written placement test to us, an instructor will call you at the time that you've indicated on your placement request form. The oral test takes approximately ten minutes, after which the instructor will advise the appropriate course level.
