Discovering your French proficiency level is a crucial first step in your language-learning journey. Whether you're starting from scratch, looking to brush up on your skills, or aiming to master the language, knowing your starting point is key.

The French Library offers a placement test designed to accurately assess your French skills and place you in the right class. Tailored to learners of all levels, our test ensures that you embark on your learning journey with confidence.

Prior to enrolling in our in-person, online, or private lessons, all new students are required to complete a quick written and oral test. This ensures that you are placed in the appropriate course level. If you have no French experience — even if you don’t know what bonjour means — that’s ok! Everyone is welcome and we have plenty of courses for beginners.

How our French Placement Test Works

Step 1: Written Test (Required)

For Adults (17+):

Complete the Written Test at least one week prior to the beginning of each of your French lessons. Depending on your level, the written portion of the test should take you 10 to 20 minutes. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at

For Pre-teens & Teens (10-16):

If your child is new to the Center and between the ages of 10 and 16, please have them take our Placement Test for Kids & Teens. Depending on your child's level, the test should take between 10 and 20 minutes. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at

For Children Under 10:

Children under 10 are always placed in courses based on their age and native language and do not require a placement test. Placement tests are required for all teen courses. Contact if you have any questions

Please note that the written test is not available on cell phones. You can use any kind of tablets or computers.

Step 2: Oral Test (Required)

Once you have submitted a written placement test to us, an instructor will call you at the time that you've indicated on your placement request form. The oral test takes approximately ten minutes.

Based on your test results, we’ll recommend French courses offered by the French Library that are tailored to your level. Whether you need to start with the basics or you're ready to refine your fluency, we have a class for you.
