Juliette prend le métro tous les jours et se plonge aussitôt dans son livre. Parfois, elle observe, autour d'elle, ceux qui lisent. La vieille dame, le collectionneur d'éditions rares, l'étudiante en mathématiques, la jeune fille qui pleure à la page 247. Elle les regarde avec curiosité et tendresse, comme si leurs lectures, leurs passions, leurs existences pouvaient donner de la couleur à la sienne, si monotone. Jusqu'au jour où Juliette décide de descendre à deux stations de l'agence immobilière où elle travaille ; un pas de côté qui va changer toute sa vie. En chemin, elle va rencontrer Soliman, étrange personnage qui vit reclus et entouré de livres. Selon lui, un livre, s'il est donné à la bonne personne, a le pouvoir de changer le cours de sa vie. Ces précieux livres, il charge ses « passeurs » de les délivrer à celui qui en aura besoin. Peu à peu, Juliette se fait une place dans ce lieu hors du temps, devient elle- même passeur, s'attache à Soliman et à sa fille Zaïde. Mais les livres, devenus personnages à part entière de son destin, vont la conduire encore plus loin...
