The French Library congratulates its trustee, Barbara (Suki) de Bragança on being awarded La Médaille d’Or de Solidarité et Valeur by La Renaissance Française – USA. This medal distinguishes persons who have devoted themselves to public service or social works of a charitable, philanthropic, civic or sporting nature, intended to improve the quality of life.
Each year, La Renaissance Française – USA, a public non-profit organization that promotes French and Francophone culture, bestows this honor to an individual in the United States. The honorees, including Ms. de Bragança, were recognized and presented with their medals by Bénédicte de Montlaur, Cultural Counselor of the French Embassy, and Bernard Duhaime, President of the Delegation in the United States.
Although first introduced to the Alliance Française as a student in Paris in the seventies, Ms. de Bragança has been a Francophile since grammar school, where a teacher ignited her interest in French cuisine, film and fashion. She then studied French at Wheaton College, spent a year abroad in Geneva while at Smith College, and went on to teach French to undergraduates while working on a Master’s degree in Comparative Literature from Florida Atlantic University. In 2009, France bestowed her with the Chevalier dans l’Ordre National du Mérite.
Executive Director of the French Library Barbara Bouquegneau said, “Suki is a prolific philanthropist and truly passionate about the French language and culture. It is rare to count on your board such an engaged and engaging personality. Her efforts and patronage have helped to sustain our services, grow the Alliance Française in Boston, and promote our values of openness, tolerance, and learning. I feel extremely lucky to be working with this incredible woman.”
Ms. de Bragança has also been active in the French Heritage Society and the Swan Society which she co-founded to assist the Curator of European Decorative Arts at the MFA, Boston. She has served as co-Chair of Literary Lights for Children at the Boston Public Library, is a Trustee at the New England Conservatory of Music and Overseer Emeritus at the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Joshua received his BA in Studio Art and Photography from Providence College before pursuing Advertising Design at the Rhode Island School of Design. Having traveled abroad consistently since he was a young child, he has always loved being engrossed in other cultures and seeing the world. His first trip abroad as a child was to France, where he fell in love with the Rive Gauche, éclairs and frites.
