Playing with Words: Translating Constrained Literature

What happens when translation meets literary constraint?

Constrained literature is built on rules, limits, and formal challenges that shape every aspect of a text. For the translator, these constraints present a unique set of questions, as meaning, form, and play are inseparable.

In this workshop, participants will explore the challenges and possibilities of translating texts written under formal or linguistic constraints. Through close reading and discussion, we will examine how translators respond to limitations not as obstacles, but as sources of creativity and invention.

Participants will reflect on how translating constrained literature requires both rigorous attention to structure and a high degree of imaginative problem-solving, revealing translation as a deeply creative act.

Authors will include Raymond Queneau, Georges Perec, and Anne Garréta, among others.

This workshop is open to participants of all levels of French. A solid command of English is essential, as discussion will focus on translation choices and the crafting of literary voice in English.

Each session is conducted in English and French, and combines close reading, comparative analysis, and open discussion. No prior translation experience is required.
