Membership Policies

All perks or benefits offered to our members are subject to these policies.


Membership Eligibility:

- Everyone can become a member of the French Library.
- Anyone under 17 years old must be under a Family membership.
- Individuals who donate over $500 in a single donation in a period of 12 months are eligible for a complimentary individual membership, subject to case-by-case evaluation upon request.
- The French Library reserves the right to revoke any person whose behavior is inappropriate or disruptive. We will not tolerate any abusive behavior towards any patron or member of the staff.

Membership Application Process:

- Membership can be initiated or renewed online, over the phone (617.912.0400), or in person (53 Marlborough Street, Boston, MA 02116) during opening hours.
- A valid email address is required for registration, communication and updates.
- Membership becomes active as soon as the payment process is finalized in the system, which takes only a couple of minutes.
- Membership is valid for one year from the date of purchase.
Upon your membership's expiration, you will be required to renew it in order to maintain access to members perks.

Discounts and Payments:

- Discounted rates are only available at some of our in-person events open to the public.
- Discounts cannot be applied retroactively to previous memberships.
- Payment is a one-time annual fee.
- French Library Gift Card can be used towards a membership.

Cancellations and Change of Levels:

- Membership is non-refundable and non-transferable.
- Upgrading membership is possible and will be charged at the prorated fee for the difference with previous level fee.
- Downgrading membership level is possible during the active membership period, but no refunds or credits will be issued.

Membership Termination:

- Membership may be terminated in case of non-payment of dues or violation of membership policies.

Members Code of Conduct:

The French Library does not permit behavior that is incompatible with the use and enjoyment of our services and premises by its visitors or staff. Unacceptable behavior includes, but is not limited to:
- soliciting,
- posting or distributing any sign, petition, notice, ad, pamphlet, or other print materials without the French Library’s permission,
- creating a disturbance/excessive noise of any kind (such as yelling and audible music devices),
- using abusive language/profanity,
- sexual harassment or any overt sexual behavior,
- overt signs of substance abuse, including drunkenness,
- sleeping in or bringing bedding into facility,
- obstructing foot traffic,
- entering any non-public area without authorization,
- using bikes, skateboards, scooters, or skates anywhere inside the building,
- fighting, running, pushing, shoving, jumping or any other rowdy behavior.
- Not following health protocols when specifically relayed to visitors.
- The French Library will notify law enforcement authorities of any violations of federal and state laws.
