Come join us for the Theater Club at the French Library, a place to read, watch, discuss and recite contemporary and classic French plays with fellow enthusiasts! At the Theater Club, we'll discuss a different play each month and read excerpts aloud to each other.

This club strives to foster discussion and dialogue around a love of contemporary theater and a chosen play: attendees are wholeheartedly encouraged to come and practice speaking in French. No acting skill required, and no public performances are planned!

Our November meeting features the 2024 play Passeport by Alexis Michalik.

Issa, a young Eritrean, is left for dead at the Calais camp, the “jungle”. Miraculously surviving his injuries and trauma, but having completely lost his memory, he can only trust his passport, the only vestige of his past. Helped by two companions in misfortune, Arun and Ali, he will have to face the administrative machine and open one by one the doors that will lead him to a residence permit.

On the other side of the barrier, Lucas, a young gendarme of Comorian origin, adopted by a couple from Calais, crosses paths with a young journalist who will shake up the person he thought he was. From meeting to meeting, our heroes will begin a journey towards their identity.

Alexis Michalik, author of Molière-winning plays, performed all over the world, adapted for cinema and comic strips, but also of a novel (Loin, Albin Michel, 2019) delivers a reflection full of humanity on the encounter between two displaced beings.

The show had its first performances at Théâtre de la Renaissance in Paris in 2024, the teaser video for the show is on YouTube, and an English language review of it appeared in the New York Times.

Club participants are asked to read the play beforehand and bring their copy to the meeting for discussion and recitation. About this Event

The Theater Club is for those who regularly read en français and for those who are reading a play in French for the first time. Between each meeting, participants will read the complete text of a play, typically 100 pages or so.

The Theater Club is free and open to all members. The discussion, recommended for all levels of French, will be moderated in French.
