Theater Club in May

Come join us for the Theater Club at the French Library, a place to read, watch, discuss and recite contemporary and classic French plays with fellow enthusiasts! At the Theater Club, we'll discuss a different play each month and read excerpts aloud to each other. 

This club strives to foster discussion and dialogue around a love of contemporary theater and a chosen play: attendees are wholeheartedly encouraged to come and practice speaking in French. No acting skill required, and no public performances are planned!

Our May meeting features the 2017 play Adieu Monsieur Haffmann by Jean-Philippe Daguerre.



Paris - May 1942: French Jews have been ordered to wear the yellow star for Jews. Joseph Haffman, a Jewish jeweler on the verge of bankruptcy, offers his employee Pierre Vigneau the chance to take over the management of his shop in exchange for sanctuary in the basement: "... I would like you to live here with your wife during the months ahead while we wait for the situation to return to normal... the Haffmann and Sons jewelry store will become the Vigneau jewelry store...". Pierre accepts this risk of secretly harboring his former boss within the walls of the shop, but only on condition that Joseph accepts Pierre's proposal: "Isabelle and I want to have a child... after several fruitless attempts, we made examinations... I am sterile... Mr. Haffmann... I would like you to have sexual intercourse with my wife so that she becomes pregnant. ..”

Club participants are asked to read the play beforehand and bring their copy to the meeting for discussion and recitation. Please order your copy of the play in advance of our meeting, as delivery can take anywhere from 10-20 days.
