Want to learn more about the secret life of translators? Who they are, how they work with the author, what their role and input are? Can they take some freedom with the text? Join us and meet Paulette Boudrot, the American translator of former French Ambassador Alain Briottet’s book Boston, un hiver si court (Boston, my blissful winter). Paulette will show us behind the scenes of the translators’ world.

Come ready with your questions as our talk will be followed by a Q&A session.

About Paulette Boudrot

Paulette Boudrot (born Letendre) was raised in Fall River, Massachusetts when French was spoken in the community and by her parents. She earned a BS in Education from Bridgewater State University, an MA in French Language and Literature from Middlebury College VT, and a diploma in 20th Century French Literature from the Sorbonne University of Paris where she was studying as Fulbright Scholar. In 2010, she was honored with the status of Chevalier of the Palmes Académiques. Paulette currently resides in Cape Cod, where she is an active member of the Rotary Club of Weymouth. Boston, My Blissful Winter was her debut novel translation.

About Alain Briottet

Alain Briottet devoted his life to a career in French Diplomacy. He served in Europe, the United States, Asia, and held several positions in collaboration with the French Ministries of Foreign Affairs. Boston, un hiver si court, a series of 12 short stories, is a reflection of his appointment in Boston during the 1980s as Consul General of France. Among his many awards, Alain Briottet was honored as a Commander in the French Legion of Honor, and with an Honorary Doctorate from Assumption College in Worcester, MA. He currently lives in Paris.

About the Book

Boston, My Blissful Winter follows a young French banker experiencing Boston for the first time as an intern at a downtown bank in the 1980s. Seeking to overcome his solitude, he visits the city’s concert halls, jazz clubs, businesses, museums, cafes, theaters, antique shops, fine restaurants and local diners. He rubs elbows with Boston Brahmins, academics, a struggling musician and a librarian, among others. With vivid images of winter and a keen eye for detail, these twelve stories bring the unique character of the city to life and offer a glimpse into the heart and soul of the thoughtful narrator.
