This March, the gallery takes us to Haiti in celebration of Le Mois de la Francophonie.

We proudly welcome several artists from the Haitian Artists Assembly of Massachusetts for an impactful and beautiful exhibit.

Artwork of various influences and mediums depict the daily lives, haitian landscapes, spirituality, vaudou, and memories of its artists and the resiliency, creativity, and sustainability of the Haitian people.

This exhibition follows the release of the art book Migrating Colors: Haitian Art in New England, which features the artwork of more than 30 artists of the Association.

State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry, Commonwealth of Massachusetts has stated, “Haitian Art is vibrant and colorful; and it transports you to a magical land of living colors. Art to Haiti is as simple as taking a ride on a colorful ‘TapTap’ or going to the Iron Market right in the heart of Port-au-Prince.”

In the words of Haitian-American author Edwidge Danticat, “Haitians paint their dreams. They paint the country they have now and the country they’d like to see. They paint, too, in migration, recreating a floating island that is a mix of old and new, an island of leaves under the morning dew, blood red sunsets, and exploding midnight starts.”

About Migrating Colors:

This book is the result of 20 years of cultural advocacy and partnerships with cultural, state, city institutions, poets and storytellers throughout the New England area. It benefited from the support of professional photographers, editors and art partners from Rhodes Island to New Hampshire. The books contains foreword comments by Haitian American author Edwidge Danticat, recipient of the 2009 MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, Massachusetts State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry and Edmund Barry Gaither, Director and Curator of the National Center of Afro-American Artists (NCAAA) who has since the Haiti earthquake helped curate various exhibitions of the Assembly.

The Haitian Artists Assembly of Massachusetts was created in Boston in 1995 by a group of artists in various disciplines and has produced dozens of cultural and artistic shows in New England over the past 20 years.

Celebrating le Mois de la francophonie

La Francophonie is a vibrant and dynamic language community shared by some 274 million speakers. From Africa to America, French is spoken on five continents and is the second most learned language after English. With more than 60,000 words, it is an international language of communication used by 80 states and governments. In the United States, the number of Francophones is estimated at 11 million and nearly 13 million Americans report having a French, French-Canadian, or Acadian ethnic origin. The majority of Franco-Americans are concentrated in New England as well as in Louisiana. French, a rich and international language!

La Francophonie c’est une communauté de langue vivante et dynamique partagée par quelques 274 millions de locuteurs et présente sur 5 continents. De l’Afrique à l’Amérique, le français et l’anglais sont les seules langues parlées sur les cinq continents, et le français est la 2ème langue la plus apprise après l’anglais. Avec plus de 60 000 mots, c’est une langue de communication internationale utilisée par 80 États et gouvernements. Aux États-Unis, on estime que le nombre de francophones s’élève à 11 millions de personnes et près de 13 millions d’Américains déclarent avoir une origine ethnique française, canadienne-française ou acadienne.
