Join us for a family-friendly screening of Les Malheurs de Sophie (Sophie’s Misfortunes), a poignant and visually rich adaptation of the beloved 19th-century novel by the Countess of Ségur, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Christophe Honoré.

Set in a lush countryside château, this charming and visually stunning film follows the mischievous and curious young Sophie, played with irresistible energy by newcomer Caroline Grant. From decapitating dolls to experimenting with live goldfish and preparing outrageous teas, Sophie’s antics are as hilarious as they are touching. But when tragedy strikes and she is left in the care of a severe and heartless stepmother, Sophie must find the courage to reclaim her joy and freedom, with the help of her loyal friends and a kind neighbor.

Blending classic period detail with whimsical modern touches—including animated animals and a lively score by Alex Beaupain—Honoré crafts a cinematic fable that captures the wild creativity and resilience of childhood.

This special screening is perfect for children and adults alike, offering humor, heart, and a dash of magic.

Christophe Honoré is a celebrated French filmmaker, writer, and playwright known for his poetic and emotionally rich storytelling. A former children's author, he rose to prominence with acclaimed films like Love Songs, Inside Paris, and Winter Boy. His work blends music, literature, and cinema, often exploring themes of love and identity. His adaptation of Les Malheurs de Sophie brings new life to the classic tale with imagination and heart.

About The Countess of Ségur

The Countess of Ségur (1799–1874) is one of France’s most beloved children’s authors. Born in Russia and writing in French later in life, she published over 20 novels as part of Hachette’s iconic Bibliothèque rose series. Her stories, filled with mischief, moral lessons, and charm, have sold millions of copies and remain staples of French childhood. Generations continue to rediscover her vivid characters through new editions, adaptations, and screen retellings.
