Inventing Impressionism: Women painters and the birth of the Modern Movement

“This woman’s work is exceptional, too bad she is not a man." - Edouard Manet on the Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot.

Often categorized as “technicians” or “ambitious seductresses” by the official Paris Salon, women painters were at the heart of the 19th century Impressionist movement. Now coming out of the shadows of art history, these innovative women present a world which is far more personal than that of their male peers, Monet, Renoir, and Cézanne. Join art expert Maria D’Amario while she explains how the culture of the Second French Empire shaped the unique careers and artistic styles of these talented artists. We will look at how Berthe Morisot, Marie Bracquemond, and Eva Gonzales -- three of the grandes dames of French painting -- challenged the ideas of the male-dominated Parisian art world and made Impressionism their own.

This presentation will be followed by a Q&A and a glass of wine.

About Maria D’Amario

Maria D’Amario is an art historian specializing in European decorative arts and the American Gilded Age. A graduate of Denison University, Maria holds a post-graduate diploma in The History of Art from the University of Oxford. She also holds an M.A. in the Venetian Renaissance from the University of Warwick in Coventry, U.K. Maria has worked with the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Royal Collection Trust in London. For many years she served as trustee of the U.K. Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington DC) and currently works for The Preservation Society of Newport County.
