The History of the French Library: A Boston Landmark Turns 80

The remarkable story of the French Library’s origins and evolution has never been fully told. To celebrate the organization’s 80th anniversary this year, board chairman Steven Galante has researched and published a book that traces the events that led to the Library’s formation in 1945, as well as its evolution and growth since then.

Early in the project, Galante discovered several cartons of overlooked documents that revealed a backstory full of surprises. The book brings to life people, places, and events long forgotten—including a wartime Boston bistro named The Fighting French Restaurant and the people who frequented it.

In his talk, Galante will trace the role of the French language and of French culture in Boston over time. In doing so, the presentation will show that the French Library’s formation was not a stand-alone event, but the culmination of centuries of French influence in Massachusetts.
