About this Event
At Travel Club you’ll meet people who love to travel like you do. You’ll share your travel experiences and discoveries. You'll trade tips on how to get there, where to stay, what to do, and more. Best of all, you’ll meet and make friends with people who share your passion for traveling to France and other Francophone places. The Travel Club is open to members of the French Library + 1 guest.
Bringing a guest? Great! Please help us plan and register for "2." Want to attend but not a member yet? Sign up here! Please note that you must register for each instance of the Travel Club separately.
About David Carroll
David Carroll is a PhD candidate in the Agriculture, Food, and Environment program at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. His research is focused on increasing the effectiveness of interventions to improve food security and rural development in smallholder farmer communities, within a context of sustainable natural resources management, ecological conservation, and climate change mitigation and adaptation. He is currently collaborating with other researchers on evaluations of rural development programs implemented in Niger and Burkina Faso, analysis of coastal ecosystem health in Indonesia, and analysis of the role of digital technology adoption in small business development in several countries across Sub-Saharan Africa. In between his master’s and PhD programs, David worked full-time for three years in the agriculture, nutrition, and environmental sectors in Haiti, first as an agricultural research and extension program manager for a nonprofit organization that manufactures and distributes therapeutic food products, and next as executive director of an agricultural technical college in Northeast Haiti.
David enjoys learning languages, and he speaks French, Haitian Creole, Antillean Creole (a French-based creole language spoken in Dominica and St. Lucia), and Spanish in addition to his native English. He also has four years of experience teaching Haitian Creole at the university level. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, backpacking, being outdoors in nature, playing piano and organ, travelling, and reading.
About Laura Majer
Laura Majer is a special education/social work professional and has been working alongside those with special needs for 12 years and those with psychiatric problems for the past eight. She has always had a big interest in travel and nature and lived for a year in Madagascar. In February 2021 she started WWOOFing and working on several farms in France to learn how to do daily farm work. She chose this path to prepare her for her upcoming professional project: opening a vacation home in the countryside to welcome those with special needs.
About Alicia Lyanting
Alicia is from the team of Workaway, a website for volunteer work in exchange for free board. Alicia started Workawaying in 2012 and has since joined the Workaway team to help with promoting the site and its core values. She speaks English, Spanish, and Cantonese as well as a smattering of other Asian and European languages. When not working or travelling, you'll find her in a dance studio or watching some film you've never heard of! I love how the countless opportunities and adventures found via the Workaway site can really inspire and open up the imagination to a real world of possibilities. The best part of working at Workaway is being able to witness how it has helped so many people, both hosts and Workawayers, to create their own lives; reaching out to their dreams and inspiring others to do the same.
