Join us for the second screening in our 2025 Ciné Club series, presented by Mariel Iezzoni, an independent filmmaker based in Cambridge. With a deep appreciation for French cinema rooted in her studies in Paris, Mariel brings a unique perspective to this evening’s film.

Discover The Measure of a Man (La Loi du Marché), a masterful social drama that reflects the challenges of the modern workplace. Directed by Stéphane Brizé, this nuanced film follows Thierry (portrayed by Vincent Lindon in a career-defining, Cannes-winning performance) as he navigates life after being laid off from his long-time job. Miraculously landing a role as a supermarket security guard, Thierry is tasked with monitoring not just shoplifters but also his own coworkers. His quiet struggle with the tough choices at work is a powerful story of resilience and staying true to his values in a challenging world.

About Stéphane Brizé

Stéphane Brizé is an acclaimed French filmmaker known for his deeply humanistic and socially conscious cinema. With a career spanning both fiction and documentary, Brizé’s works often explore the struggles and resilience of ordinary people facing extraordinary challenges. His films, including Hors Saison and Mademoiselle Chambon, have garnered critical acclaim for their subtle character studies and exploration of human relationships.

About Mariel Iezzoni

Mariel Iezzoni is an independent filmmaker practicing both fiction and documentary film. Her latest short, Burial, premiered at the Richmond Film Festival and was a Special Jury Nominee. She received her MFA in Film from the City College of New York where she graduated a BAFTA Scholar and winner of the Chantal Akerman Student Prize.

She is currently writing and producing her first full-length feature film, Red Hill Town, about a family who are the last remaining citizens of an abandoned coal mining town in northeast Pennsylvania. She began her love of French cinema as an undergraduate student in Paris.
