About this Class

Engage with art history while improving your French! Explore three centuries of French art through the works and life of women artists who contributed brilliantly to major artistic movements, often without the same visibility as their male contemporaries. This course is designed as a 10-week journey: you can choose to attend just Part I (5 weeks), or Part II (also 5 weeks) or the full 10-week course.
Part one:
• Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun: Women’s Portraits from Rococo to Neoclassicism
• Rosa Bonheur and the Rise of Women’s Studios
• Marie Laurencin: Peace and Femininity in the Interwar Years
• Ceci n’est pas une muse: Women Artists in the Surrealist Struggle
• Women in Sculpture: From Camille Claudel to Germaine Richier

Part 2:
• Berthe Morisot, an Impressionist Pioneer
• Suzanne Valadon: Queen of Post-Impressionist Paris
• Sonia Delaunay: From Painting to Fashion in the Roaring Twenties
• Françoise Gilot: Beyond Picasso
• Louise Bourgeois and Niki de Saint Phalle: Leaving to Exist – The American Adventure
