About this Class
This class offers an in-depth exploration of the Savoie region, nestled in the heart of the French Alps. Through a multidisciplinary approach, you will discover its fascinating history—from its time as an independent duchy to its integration into modern France—alongside its distinctive cultural identity shaped by mountain life. The course will highlight the region’s stunning natural landscapes, including iconic alpine peaks, lakes, and valleys, and examine how these environments have influenced local ways of life.
Students will also explore Savoyard traditions, from seasonal festivals to architectural heritage, as well as the region’s renowned cuisine, including specialties such as fondue, raclette, and tartiflette. Particular attention will be given to the economic and cultural importance of mountain activities, such as skiing, hiking, and pastoralism. Finally, the class will consider contemporary challenges and transformations in Savoie, including tourism, environmental sustainability, and the balance between preserving tradition and embracing modernity.
