The Making of the Louvre by Russell Kelley

Did you know that the Musée du Louvre in Paris is the world’s largest and most visited museum of art? However, its own history as an architectural monument and symbol of France is less well known. Russell Kelley, an American resident in Paris for 30 years and author of The Making of Paris, will discuss the history of the Louvre from its origins as a fortress by the Seine in 1190 to I.M. Pei’s Pyramid of 1989. In the 800 years in between all the great builder kings, queens, emperors and presidents of France made their mark on the complex. Using period maps, drawings, illustrations and photographs, Russell Kelley will chart the evolution of one of France’s most iconic monuments. Russell’s favorite building in Paris is the Louvre. In his lecture this evening, he will explain why.
