The French Library is pleased to welcome Joshua Kent Bookman, a Bostonian author and globetrotter, for a discussion of his second novel, To: All The Friends I Killed. During the interview with Joshua we will discuss the main topics of his coming-of-age novel: friendships, loyalty, loneliness, plus society’s new and old expectations of adulthood - all the challenges that the millennial generation has to face. Joshua, francophone and lover of France, chose to situate this quest for identity and acceptance at a French vineyard near Bordeaux.

Come ready with your questions as our author talk will be followed by a Q&A session, with a book signing and a glass of wine!

About Joshua Kent Bookman

Joshua Kent Bookman (1990) was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and reformed by life and work in Sweden, France, and Italy. Previous published works include “Fruits of Mer” (Paulette Éditrice), “close to elsewhere,” “Hitom,” and “Some Reverse American Dreams” (LYS Förlag). “To: All The Friends I Killed” is Bookman’s second novel.

About the Book

After the death of his best friend, a young man vanishes from the United States, seeking a fresh start in France. He stumbles upon work at a vineyard and thinks he has found a way out in a land of ancestral beauty. But he quickly discovers Europe alone can’t solve his problems. Haunted by his past, he has to come to terms with his own and his society’s expectations of adulthood. Dark enchanted truths about love and friendship complicate the story of how he lost his best friend — a sister, a girlfriend, and a lodestar.

In this coming-of-age novel, we are faced with the life choices of the millennial generation, the postponement of traditional benchmarks in our twenties, and the queer or asexual attitude towards contemporary loneliness.
