Perhaps you took a weekend to dicover a new city, to explore a new country, or to enjoy a journey by plane, train or automobile. The travel bug is easy to catch, and once you have, I guarantee that you will always be thinking of your next trip: where to go, what to eat, sights to see, and more. Sometimes, the best place to start - for inspiration and for trip planning - is with a good book, be it a trusty travel guide or an engaging novel.

Enjoy this selection of travel resources, from the practical to the poetic, on our e-library, Culturethèque.

Tip: Culturethèque is widely accessible in the United States, and your login will give you access to all streaming materials (music, press, BDs) from California to Maine. If you plan to travel abroad, be sure to choose a book that you can download (ePub format) and store on your tablet, computer, or smartphone. If you forget to stock up before leaving (or if, like me, you finish your book before your trip is over!), just think of all of the wonderful literary souvenirs you can bring back from local bookstores...

Travel guides

Our e-library has French langauge Petit Futé guides to regions and cities of France that you can download to prepare for your next trips, with recommendations for hotels, cultural sites, museums, and shopping. The ePub format of the guides even link to websites and Google map locations for sites, monuments, and (very importantly) restaurants.

Search "Petit Futé" on Culturethèque to find a complete list of the guides.

Stories from around the world

Click on each cover to discover interactive audio storybooks from "La Souris qui Raconte":

World music

The "Listen" page on Culturethèque has music divided by genre, including "World Music", perfect for learning about a culture from varying musical styles and local artists. You can search by singer or pick one of the CDs from the selection. To access the 1D touch platform, simply click on any CD.
1D touch allows you to create playlists and lists of favorite songs and artists. The "Browse" tab on 1D touch, which can be found to the left under "My Account", allows you to peruse selections by musical style: rap, pop, chanson française and more. "Musique du monde" (see right), for example, will take you on a trip around the world through the songs and albums of international, independent and up-and-coming artists.

Travel magazines

Search by title to read and stream magazines on travel: Grands Reportages, Trek Magazine, Désirs de voyages, Belles régions de France, and Détours en France.

Travel literature

Novels, essays, graphic novels, and récits de voyage are all available on our e-library. Here are a few titles that I would recommend to any grand voyageur:
Bon voyage!

Christianne Beasley

Head Librarian

A native Mainer, Christianne has worked in libraries all her life and came to the Center after three years of managing the library at the Alliance Française in Washington DC. She has a B.A. in French Studies from Smith College, a MLIS from Simmons College, and loves children's literature, BDs, and cookbooks. When she is not at the library, you can find her traveling, baking, and - quelle surprise! - reading new books.
