Sophia grew up in a multilingual household in Canada and earned an undergraduate degree in English and French Literature at Vassar College. She went on to earn a Masters in French Literature at the Paris campus of New York University and then a doctorate in French Literature at New York University, where she also taught French. She is an enthusiast of French literature and classical music.
