Vers le Sud est un recueil d'histoires entrelacées qui forment un roman. Plusieurs personnages reviennent, comme Fanfan, double de l'auteur adolescent, qu'on avait déjà croisé dans Le Goût des jeunes filles. Mais ce qui crée l'unité profonde du livre, c'est le thème. Dans toutes les histoires, on retrouve un attrait vers le Sud, c'est-à-dire Haïti et ses corps noirs. Attrait souvent inexprimé, et d'autant plus fort. Le propriétaire d'un café de Brooklyn s'établit à Port-au-Prince et y embauche des gigolos pour séduire sa clientèle féminine. Une Américaine loue une maison bleue qui ressemble à une peinture naïve où elle va faire de troublantes découvertes. La fille d'un maître séduit un esclave. Un roman sensuel, troublant, sur l'attirance des chairs.
