En février 1974, Patricia Hearst, petite-fille du célèbre magnat de la presse William Randolph Hearst, est enlevée contre rançon  par un groupuscule révolutionnaire dont elle ne tarde pas à épouser la cause. Un  événement mémorable dont la résonance va également "kidnapper" l'existence de trois femmes de générations différentes : une Américaine et deux Françaises tour à tour attachées à comprendre et reconfigurer cet épisode. Par ce roman sur l'influence décisive de leur rencontre éphémère, par sa relecture de l'affaire Hearst et de son impact médiatique et politique, Lola Lafon s'empare d'une icône paradoxale de la "story" américaine,  de son rayonnement dans l'espace public et du chavirement qu'elle a  engendré dans le destin de ses héroïnes.
