Babar et Céleste partent pour leur voyage de noces en ballon. Ils sont surpris par une tempête et s'échouent sur une île déserte où ils sont attaqués par de féroces cannibales. Ils parviennent à s'échapper puis sont repêchés par un grand bateau où ils sont emprisonnés et donnés à un cirque. Quand enfin ils parviennent à rejoindre le royaume avec l'aide de la vielle dame, une guerre avec les rhinocéros est en marche. Mais grâce à un stratagème de Babar, les éléphants resteront sains et saufs.
